About Greener Together

Who’s behind the project?

Greener Together is a programme made in partnership with the residents of Alma Street, Simon’s Walk, Whitear Walk, St Paul’s Drive, Waddington Road and Waddington Street. It is organised by the Mayor of London, Afterparti, Ten Years’ Time and Hubbub who came together to fundraise the project and are now working together to help make Alma Street happier, healthier and greener. We are also working with Newham Council, who are supporting the project, and TellTale research, an independent research consultancy who are doing the evaluation of the project.

How will I benefit?

By listening to each other, we will understand some of the ways that Alma Street can be a better place to live. We will work together on some free activities and projects that improve our quality of life, making us happier, healthier and greener.

How long will the project last?

Greener Together will run until at least August 2022, and we hope to continue the activities if they are a success.

How can I get involved?

This is a project created together with Alma Street, Simon’s Walk, Whitear Walk, St Paul’s Drive, Waddington Street and Waddington Road residents. It’s up to us to say what would make our street better, and then work together to achieve it. The first step is to sign up to our weekly email. We have also set up a Facebook group so we can talk about what’s important in the area, and are hosting regular community meetings.

What is the overall ambition of the project?

Some communities in London are particularly affected by things like poor air quality, or our homes overheating in the summer- these are the effects of pollution and climate change. This can be really bad for our health and happiness. The good news is that we can work together to help make some of these things better. Together, we want to make Alma Street and neighbouring streets happier, healthier and greener. We also want to share our stories with other Londoners so they can run similar projects in their area - and maybe even across the world!

Why Alma Street?

Alma Street and neighbouring streets has a lack of community green space and has many residential buildings that get really hot in the summer. Many of these buildings will continue to get hotter and harder to live in as temperatures rise in the city due to climate change. The area is also home to high air pollution levels, caused by burning fossil fuels (coal, petrol etc.) which power our industry, cars and cities.

We hope Greener Together will raise awareness of these issues and show how strong communities can make positive changes where they live to live happier, healthier and greener lives.

We care deeply about supporting communities who are often less engaged or spoken to when it comes to environmental or “green” issues in our city - these include people of colour and people from lower income backgrounds. We are here to support a positive change for a greener future together.

Can I take part if I don’t live on Alma Street?

The project is open to residents who live on Alma Street, Simons Walk, Whitear Walk, St Paul’s Drive, Waddington Street and Waddington Road and our local friends and families. We hope to expand the project into other areas over the coming year.
